Our interview with Jim Downs, Assistant Professor of History and American Studies at Connecticut College and author of Sick From Freedom: African-American Illness and Suffering during the Civil War and Reconstruction published by Oxford University Press. In the interview, Jim shares his thoughts on disease in the Civil War among freedmen, his take on the slave agency debate, and how he teaches the Civil War era in his classroom.
