The Atlanta Campaign and the 1864 Election
Thursday, August 13, 7 p.m. EDT
zoom.us, CWRT Congress The 1864 presidential election was not one that the incumbent, Abraham Lincoln, thought he was going to win. In fact, Lincoln prepared a document to that effect and had his cabinet blindly sign it. War weariness, mounting casualties, and Copperhead fever had just about defeated Lincoln well before November balloting. And then something happened that changed all of that—Atlanta fell. Colonel Ed Lowe details the scene as he compares the downward trend of Lincoln’s fortunes and the retreat strategy employed by Joseph E. Johnston. Free, but donations are accepted.

National Museum of Civil War Medicine
Civil War Walking Tour in Downtown Frederick

Join NMCWM docent Brad Stone for a walking tour of Downtown Frederick that focuses on the city’s role as a makeshift hospital in the final months of 1862. In the aftermath of America’s bloodiest day at Antietam on September 17, 1862, over 8,000 wounded soldiers, Union and Confederate, were brought to makeshift hospital wards in Frederick’s churches, schools, hotels, and private homes. Many of those same buildings still make up the historic district today. Masks are required throughout the tour and we request that you practice strict social distancing. $15 per person, which includes walking tour and admission to museum galleries; free for members.
