The Week Ahead: January 10th-15th
Happy New Year! With the start of a new year, we embark upon a whole new year of sesquicentennial events. Below are the Civil War events happening around the U.S. this week.

Featured Event: January 14th-16th: Free Entrance Days at ALL National Park Service sites.

January 10th @10:30am and @6pm: "Farewell to the Civil War," a behind-the-scenes look at packing a major 150th anniversary museum exhibit and a view of other Civil War items @ the Virginia Historical Society (Richmond, VA). Tickets are $17.
January 11th @ 12:15pm: "Lincoln and McClellan" with an NPS ranger @ Baines Books and Coffee (Appomattox, VA).
January 11th @7pm: The Avon Free Public Library is set to begin its series of five monthly events honoring and exploring the terrible conflict, “Let’s Talk About it: Making Sense of the American Civil War.” The first event is a discussion of the novel “March” by Geraldine Brooks. The event will be held @ Avon Congregational Church (CT).
January 12th @12pm: "Arkansas's Union Forces: What Drove Madison County Men to Enlist" @ the Old State House Museum (Little Rock, AR).
January 13th @1-3pm: "Robert E. Lee's Key Decisions, April 2-6, 1865" @ the Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Historical Park Visitor Center (VA).
January 13th-15th: Battle of Galveston anniversary activities featuring living history, tours and lectures.
January 14th @11am and 12, 1, 2 and 3pm: "The Mystery of the H.L. Hunley" @ the South Carolina State Museum (Columbia, SC).
January 14th @1:30pm: "The Young Napoleon Part 2, George McClellan in 1862" @ the Gettysburg National Military Park Visitor Center (PA).
January 14th @ 2pm: The Sutliff Museum Civil War 150 Committee will present a program on famous Civil War Confederate spy Belle Boyd in the Thomas Meeting Room of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library (OH).
January 14th @3pm: "Civil War Shipwrecks off Carteret County" @ the North Carolina Maritime Museum (Beaufort, NC).
January 14th @6-10pm: Friends of Fort Defiance is organizing a Civil War Ball in support of the new Fort Defiance Interpretive and Visitors Center. The ball will be held @ Emmanuel Family Life Center (Clarksville, TN). Tickets are $35 per person; for reservations, email ball@ftdefianceclarksville.com or call Friends board member Don Horton at 542-0140.
January 14th-15th: "150th Anniversary of the January 1862 Bath-Romney Campaign." Departs from the Country Inn (Berkeley Springs, WV). Tickets are $30/one-day, $55/two days.
January 15th @ 2pm: "Abraham Lincoln's Assassination and John Wilkes Booth's Attempted Escape" by Ed Bearss, @ the Masonic Theater (New Bern, NC).

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: March 23-24, 2012 - Kennesaw, Ga. 9th Annual Symposium on New Interpretations of the Civil War: '1862: The Path to Freedom.' The Civil War Center at Kennesaw State University presents renowned Civil War historians Ken Noe, Wiley Sword, Jeff Wert, and Brian Wills on Saturday, March 23 at 9:00 a.m. The various lectures will focus on events from 1862. An opening reception will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23 at the Southern Museum in Kennesaw. Please plan to attend these special events – free admission, and free parking available for Saturday's program in Kennesaw State's West Parking Deck, located on Campus Loop Drive.
